Car reported stolen crashes after police chase

A car that been reported stolen crashed in Tower Hamlets after being chased by officers, police said in the early hours of this morning.

Two people are now in custody after a “short pursuit”, said officers from Tower Hamlets Police.

Sgt Richardson, PC Gell and PC Pekute spotted the car being driven erratically in E14

The car was brought to a halt by the police officers, and images show it mounted the pavement and hit a bollard.

Damage to the stolen vehicle was extensive but, despite the crash, no serious injuries were sustained by any parties involved, said police.

In a report, published on statista.com this month, it was revealed that 89,400 motor vehicles thefts were recorded in England and Wales from the period April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021.

That figure is still the lowest recorded, between the same calendar dates, since 2015/16 and, in 2002/03, there were just under 307,000 motor vehicle thefts in England and Wales.
