Met Office issues weather warning as parts of London to be hit with 60mph winds

It’s set to be a windy start to a rainy weekend in some areas of the capital as summer continues to hide away.

A severe weather warning will come into force today (May 20) as ferocious gusts of up to 60mph are set to batter parts of London.

Meanwhile, the rainfall that has marred miserable May will continue with heavy showers set to the rest of London today.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind which will be in place from 6pm to 9pm tonight covering parts of South East London.

The agency states that during the time frame: “Windy weather may lead to some travel disruption and, perhaps, damage to temporary outdoor structures.”

Forecasters said those in the affected areas should prepare for ‘damaging conditions’ as well as travel chaos.

Met Office forecaster Clare Nasir said: “We are just about to embark on some wet and windy weather, strongest winds will be towards the south.

“Heaviest rain across south west Scotland, north west England as well as northern Ireland, North Wales, so all in all most of us seeing some quite tricky weather.”

She added that ‘this rain will be relentless’ in many regions throughout the day.

For this weekend the Met Office said that conditions would be more settled on Saturday but yet more rain would strike on Sunday.

While the country suffers the miserable weather the last bank holiday in May is expected to see soaring temperatures and a mini-heatwave.

Bank Holiday Monday on May 31 is forecast to see blistering highs of 20C with temperatures expected to return to warmer climates from next week.
