Every year, to mark International Women’s Day, Labour MP Jess Phillips stands up in the House of Commons and reads out the names of all the women who have been killed by men in the past 12 months.
The annual tradition always makes for difficult listening. This year, it took the Birmingham Yardley MP more than the three-minute speech limit to read out all the names, which came to 117.
The occasion was even more sombre this year following the disappearance of 33-year-old Sarah Everard in Clapham just over a week ago.
Met Police officer Wayne Couzens has been arrested on suspicion of murder alongside a woman in her 30s who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Ms Philips did not add Sarah’s name to the list and said she hoped she never had to.
“There has been much debate at what I would say at the end of the list,” she said.
“Her name rings out across all of our media.
“We have all prayed that the name of Sarah Everard would never be on any list.
“Let’s pray every day and work every day to make sure nobody’s name ends up on this list again.”
On that list were, however, the names of 24 women who have been killed in London over the past year.
