Wendy’s creating 400 jobs at new UK restaurants

American burger chain Wendy’s is expanding across the UK with a series of restaurant openings it says will create 400 jobs.

The company, known for its square burgers, returned to the UK in 2021 after two decades away. It now has more than 30 restaurants, and opened stores last year in Derby, Guildford, Chelmsford and Bilton.

Wendy’s will open a Middlesbrough venue “in the coming months”, with another franchisee restaurant opening in Newcastle later this year.

In Yorkshire Wendy’s is set to open a second Sheffield venue, this time in Arena Road, following its first opening in the city in 2022. Just last month it added a second site in Hull.

Merseyside will see its first bricks and mortar Wendy’s open this year after the success of the brand’s delivery kitchen at Gravity Max in Liverpool city centre.

In London, Wendy’s newest franchisee, GH Burgers, will be opening its first restaurant in Wood Green later this year. Meanwhile Wendy’s will be opening in Cambridge and in Southend-on Sea, with Colchester soon set to see its second Wendy’s.

Wendy’s has already started recruitment for the new restaurants.

Michael Clarke, UK managing director for The Wendy’s Company said, “We’ve seen great momentum in building Wendy’s fandom in the UK, and the love and excitement for this iconic brand grows stronger with each new restaurant opening.

“British consumers constantly ask, ‘Where’s Wendy’s opening next?’ and we’re thrilled to answer the call by rapidly expanding our brand presence into new areas across the country, giving Brits more access to fresh, high-quality food that they deserve.”
