Why London should be the only contender in the vote for the UK’s Favourite Place

I don’t think it’s possible to try and describe London in just a few words. If anything, I don’t think it does the city any justice. London is a place that has to be seen to be believed – or experienced in this case.

How can you try to simplify London with just a few adjectives? You can’t, that’s the point. London is beyond simple, it’s complex and has to be discovered by anyone who walks its streets.

That’s why I’m backing the capital in the nationwide poll to find the UK’s Favourite Place run by our sister site 2Chill. Don’t forget to cast your vote.

So I won’t try to simplify my adoration for London, because that will only do a fraction of the job. But where do I begin?

This big ol’ melting pot has mastered the blend of embodying its past with the present; its iconic landmarks with the swanky modern skyscrapers; its eclectic cuisines; and every individual that’s walked through its streets – there’s something for everyone, so everyone’s invited.

Everyone has a different story to tell, so you could live eight million lifetimes if you decided, and not one of them will be the same.

London let’s people be who they want to be – and I’m still navigating my way around.

Now, even after 25 years on this Earth, I still have nooks and crannies to explore, and the list of discoveries doesn’t have an end in sight – not that I’m complaining.

No area of London is the same, so you’ll never get bored. Discover a hidden side street, or a bar behind a fridge door – expect the unexpected when you travel down the rabbit hole.

Bask in the sunshine in the gardens in the Church of St. Dunstan’s ruins, or shelter from the rain in one of the oldest pubs in the city, the Cittie of Yorke in Holborn, which dates back to 1430.

Don’t worry they’ve changed their beer drafts since then.

But if you want to get to the heart of the city you’ll have to sample its edible goods. It’s one of the things that London excels in, and if anyone tells you otherwise, they haven’t been to the right places.

Sample the best and original Jewish beigels from Beigel Bake on Brick Lane – there’s no competition.

Or if you’re looking for a boss sandwich, the Dusty Knuckle in Dalston produces some of the most delectable bites you’ll come across – all while helping at-risk youths change their lives.

The city brings the spices from the Irani cafes of Bombay, to the streets of Ho Chi Minh city, the decadence of Europe, and the blazing ovens of some of the best bakeries in the world – no seriously, there’s just so many to choose.

Oh and don’t forget the markets – Camden, Spitalfields, Borough… once again the list is endless.

Authenticity isn’t just at the heart of London’s food – it keeps the city’s soul alive.

London is the place where you accidentally stumble into an amateur comedy night in a pub’s basement and become the accidental star of the show.

It’s your world and the city is living in it.

London is the epitome of professional but also the country’s biggest playground.

The city is effortless – but it’s made whole by its people who write their own stories here.

It’s romantic yet grungy, luxurious yet down-to-earth, bold and spontaneous, breath-taking and awe-inspiring, but humble and welcoming.

Take a snapshot of the city from amazing heights at the Shard, or watch the city come to life at night from Primrose Hill. Or even sample the skyline from the top of a Peckham car park.

And when the day is over, there’s a whole other adventure to embark upon tomorrow.

London lets you be who you want to be – no judgement, no questions asked, it just lets you be.

Come rain or shine, London is a city for all seasons.
